Poll: 2-in-3 Americans Oppose “Catch-and-Release”

The latest Harvid/Harris Poll confirms that a clear majority of Americans reject releasing illegal immigrants into the interior of the United States to await their asylum court hearings. Instead, 2-in-3 Americans think self-proclaimed asylum seekers should be immediately turned back to their country of origin to await a hearing from the other side of the border. Per the poll, less than 35% of all voters support such “catch and release” practices by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The poll also reveals that 47% want the asylum system fixed to stop massive fraud and abuse of America’s generosity. Ahead of the 2020 election, these numbers do not bode well for Democratic hopefuls.

The latest Harvard/Harris Poll reveals that about 2-in-3 Americans, or 66 percent, said they oppose the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) releasing border crossers into the U.S. while they await their asylum claims process. Instead, voters said border crossers should be immediately turned back to Mexico while awaiting their asylum hearing.

Less than 35 percent of all voters said they supported releasing border crossers into the U.S. — including only 32 percent of swing voters and less than 30 percent of self-described “moderates.”
