Biden Institute Won’t Disclose Donors

The Biden Institute, a policy research center founded by Joe Biden at the University of Delaware, has no plans to disclose its donors after the president-elect takes office, Politico reported on Monday.

Legal experts and watchdog groups said the lack of transparency could create an ethical dilemma for Biden, particularly if he keeps his name on the institute and it continues to fundraise while he’s in the White House.

“They should at the very least disclose their donors, and I think the Biden family should at the very least take their name off if they’re going to continue to raise money,” former George W. Bush administration chief ethics lawyer Richard Painter told Politico.

The Biden Institute, which had many of Biden’s incoming administration staffers on its payroll, is part of a network of foundations and policy centers that he established after his vice presidency.

The institute is currently in the middle of a large fundraising push to raise $20 million that is expected to continue well into Biden’s presidency.

A University of Delaware spokesperson told Politico that the university already publishes a list of contributors who give $100,000 or more to the school, but gave no indication that the institute plans to release the names of specific donors to the Biden Institute, or those who give less than six-figures. Mitch McConnell: Trump ‘Provoked’ Capitol Rioters, Spread ‘Lies’ About Election

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) slammed President Trump on Tuesday, alleging the president played a key role in provoking a mob to attack the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

McConnell delivered his harsh remarks during comments on the Senate floor. The Republican leader said that Trump, along with “other powerful people,” shared responsibility in the Jan. 6 riot and attack on Congress.

“The last time the Senate convened, we had just reclaimed the Capitol from violent criminals who tried to stop congress from doing our duty. The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people,” McConnell said. “And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.”

“But we pressed on. We stood together and said an angry mob would not get veto power over the rule of law in our nation, not even for one night. We certified the people’s choice for their 46th president,” McConnell said.

Trump spoke at a rally before the riot to a crowd of his supporters, objecting to certifying the electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden and insisting that the election was “stolen.” He urged his supporters to “peacefully” march to the Capitol and protest. Read more…

Biden’s Top Intelligence Pick Says CCP an Adversary ‘On Some Issues’

President-elect Joe Biden’s pick to head the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to answer a yes-or-no question about whether the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is an adversary of the United States.

Avril Haines, who Biden intends to nominate as the director of national intelligence, told lawmakers on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence as part of her confirmation hearing on Tuesday that China is an adversary in some areas while a partner in others, like climate change.

She deferred to Biden’s definition of the communist regime as a “global competitor,” while adding that she will nonetheless work to counter Beijing’s illegal espionage.

“Is China, under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party an adversary of the United States?” Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) asked.

“China is adversarial and an adversary on some issues and in other issues we try to cooperate with them, whether in the context of climate change or other things,” Haines responded.

“And ultimately the frame that the president-elect has identified for thinking about this is a global competitor,” she added. “But I think that doesn’t, to your point, in any way mitigate the fact that when it comes to espionage or the variety of areas that I’ll be focused on if I’m confirmed as the director of national intelligence, they are an adversary and that we have to work on those issues, in particular, countering their illegal, unfair, aggressive actions in these spaces.” Read more…

FBI Vetting 25,000 Troops Deployed To Biden Inauguration; AP Lists Trump Supporters Among Potential Threats

Following the breach of the U.S. Capitol earlier this month, the FBI is vetting 25,000 National Guard troops deployed to Washington D.C. to secure the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden taking place on Wednesday.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. defense officials say they are conducting the vetting process out of concern about an “insider attack or other threat” from service members involved in securing the inauguration.

The “threats against Biden’s inauguration,” AP underscores, “have been fueled by supporters of President Donald Trump, far-right militants, white supremacists and other radical groups”:

Insider threats have been a persistent law enforcement priority in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But in most cases, the threats are from homegrown insurgents radicalized by al-Qaida, the Islamic State group or similar groups. In contrast, the threats against Biden’s inauguration have been fueled by supporters of President Donald Trump, far-right militants, white supremacists and other radical groups. Many believe Trump’s baseless accusations that the election was stolen from him, a claim that has been refuted by many courts, the Justice Department and Republican officials in key battleground states. CNN Pushes to Close Down Newsmax TV

CNN is making no mistake about it: It wants to censor and close Newsmax from broadcasting as a cable news channel.

Apparently jolted by the fact Newsmax has skyrocketed to become the 4th highest-rated cable news channel in the country, the liberal CNN is decrying what it calls Newsmax’s “election denialism” and is seeking to have it “deplatformed” from cable and satellite systems across the nation.

Oliver Darcy, CNN’s leftwing media critic, has been demanding cable operators drop Newsmax, which is currently carried by every major system in the nation. Newsmax is also streamed free by most OTT platforms and devices.

In a CNN column in early January, Darcy falsely claimed conservative media caused the protests at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

“After all, it was the very lies that Fox, Newsmax, and OAN spread that helped prime President Trump’s supporters into not believing the truth: That he lost an honest and fair election,” Darcy wrote.

Darcy’s demands have been echoed on CNN’s shows, including their Sunday media show “Reliable Sources” hosted by liberal media analyst Brian Stelter.

On this week’s Sunday show, Stelter’s guests focused on deplatforming Newsmax. Read more…

Biden To Ask Congress On First Day To Grant Legal Status To 11 Million Illegal Aliens

As one of his first acts in office, President-elect Joe Biden will ask Congress to offer legal status to an estimated 11 million foreigners in the country illegally.

Biden will announce legislation to provide a pathway to citizenship for millions on his first day, according to The Associated Press.

The president-elect campaigned on the issue – an issue on which he is diametrically opposed to President Trump, who sought to shut down the southern border with Mexico and banned foreigners from several countries from coming into the U.S.

“This really does represent a historic shift from Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda that recognizes that all of the undocumented immigrants that are currently in the United States should be placed on a path to citizenship,” Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, who was briefed on the bill, told the AP.

“The bill also would provide a shorter pathway to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of people with temporary protected status and beneficiaries of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals who were brought to the U.S. as children, and probably also for certain front-line essential workers, vast numbers of whom are immigrants,” Yahoo News reported. Loews Hotel Chain Cancels Josh Hawley Fundraiser Following Pressure From Social Media

Loews Hotels has booted a “Family Fun Day” fundraiser for Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) from one of its Orlando, Florida, area hotels after a lawyer on social media tweeted out a link to the event’s flier, calling Hawley a “traitor.”

Loews Portofino Bay Resort at Universal Studios Orlando announced Saturday in a statement posted to Twitter that they are “horrified and opposed to the events at the Capitol and all who supported and incited the actions,” and that, “in light of those events and for the safety of our guests and team members, we have informed the host of the Feb. fundraiser that it will no longer be held at Loews Hotels.”

The “Fun-Filled-Family-Friendly” weekend event, sponsored by the Fighting for Missouri PAC, was slated to take place in mid-February, and tickets to the event were listed at between $1,000 and $5,000 plus travel expenses and room rates. Fighting for Missouri is a primary fundraiser for Hawley, having netted more than a quarter-million for the Missouri Senator in 2020.

“The fundraiser was canceled after liberal lawyer Daniel Uhlfelder tweeted a photo of the event on Friday branding Hawley a traitor. He also asked Loews Hotels and Universal Orlando why their Portofino Bay Hotel [was] hosting the February event for the Republican,” the Daily Mail reported Sunday. Read more…

Biden Readying Legislative, Executive Blitz in Administration’s First 10-Days

President-elect Joe Biden is readying a blitz of executive orders and legislation during his first ten days in the White House.

On Saturday, the New York Times reported that the president-elect and his team plan to use their first days in office to “signal a turning point” away from the Trump era. Central to that effort will be a flurry of executive orders issued, followed by a broader push in Congress to pass not only economic relief for individuals impacted by the novel coronavirus pandemic, but also comprehensive immigration reform.

“On his first day in office alone, Mr. Biden intends a flurry of executive orders that will be partly substantive and partly symbolic,” the Times reported.

Topping the list of Biden’s first executive orders is “rescinding the travel ban on several predominantly Muslim countries … extending pandemic-related limits on evictions and student loan payments, issuing a mask mandate for federal property and interstate travel.”

Upon taking office, the president-elect will also rejoin the Paris Climate Accord and restore support for the World Health Organization.

On the congressional front, according to the Times, “plans to send sweeping immigration legislation on his first day in office providing a pathway to citizenship for 11 million people in the country illegally.” Read more…

China ‘Sought to Influence’ 2020 US Election, Director of National Intelligence Assesses

Director of National Intelligence (DNI) John Ratcliffe assessed that China interfered in the 2020 federal elections, according to a letter transmitted to Congress.

In the letter (pdf), Ratcliffe alleges that intelligence about China’s election interference was suppressed by management at the CIA, which pressured analysts to withdraw their support for the view.

Citing a report by the Intelligence Community Analytic Ombudsman Barry Zulauf, the director of national intelligence said some analysts were reluctant to describe China’s actions as election interference because they disagreed with the policies of President Donald Trump.

The Washington Examiner published Ratcliffe’s letter and the ombudsman report on Jan. 17, ten days after publishing an original report on the documents. The ODNI did not respond to requests from The Epoch Times to authenticate the documents.

“Based on all available sources of intelligence, with definitions consistently applied, and reached independent of political considerations or undue pressure – that the People’s Republic of China sought to influence the 2020 U.S. federal elections,” Ratcliffe wrote. Read more…

Liz Cheney Foes Plot Removal From GOP Leadership After Impeachment Vote

The knives are out for Liz Cheney.

The Wyoming congresswoman and No. 3 leader of the House GOP caucus faces an uprising from conservative lawmakers unhappy with her yes vote to impeach President Trump.

Cheney was one of only 10 House Republicans to side with Democrats Wednesday.

Some Republicans are looking to stage an internal coup using a playbook employed during an attempted ouster of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997.

“We’ve researched the rules thoroughly and there has been a lot of discussion on how to handle this,” Montana Rep. Matt Rosendale told Newsmax. Cheney ”is out of step with the conference in such a monumental way.”

Rosendale was the first House Republican to call for Cheney’s removal as the House Republican Conference chair after her renegade vote. Read more…
